Mike Variot came into town for a few days and celebrated his birthday with the Texas Gulf Coast Trikers Wednesday, January 28 at Kelley's in League City. He founded and led the group for many years until his job required him to travel and live out of state during the past 5 years. He has remained a member during that time. He might be returning to the Clear Lake area this year.
Diana Moll had a major heart attack during a routine doctor's visit and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where a stent was put in during emergency surgery that saved her life. She is home and recuperating. Everyone wishes Diana a speedy recovery.
Mike Zandueta, a charter member of Texas Gulf Coast Trikers branch, has been battling major health issues for several years and decided to move back to his hometown in California. Close relatives will be available there to help him deal with the physical challenges he faces. A farewell meet and greet was scheduled for 1 pm on Friday, January 9 at his favorite eating spot, Mamacita's on NASA Road One, a few blocks from the Manned Spacecraft Center. The weather was bad, but seven hearty souls showed up, had a great meal and settled their checks.
Just as they were ready to leave, Walter Sorrells showed up. He had been fighting traffic for over two hours because of two accidents on his route. Everyone sat back down and enjoyed more ice tea while he ate and then it was agreed by all that a dessert was in order. After paying their new tabs, everyone was getting ready to leave again when Dolphin walked in. Yahoo Groups had erroneously sent a notice on the group page that the time had been changed to 7 pm. She called and was told to come on to the restaurant. She arrived at 5, ordered and ate, and then a waiter was paid for the third time and everyone left at 6 pm, after a total of five hours.
Outlaw and Night Owl walked out to their truck and everyone began driving away. Their truck would not start and they had to wait on AAA for a tow. No one knew what had happened or everyone would have gone back inside with them for more tea and war stories while they waited. It was definitely a record for our group sharing a local meal, but that is how this branch operates.
